• To equip teachers with the skills, resources and lesson plans to introduce a peer mediation scheme as part of a whole school approach to conflict resolution. • To support teachers in enabling pupils to understand that their own actions and individual responses to conflict are the best place to start contributing to global peacemaking processes. • To empower pupils to handle conflict situations creatively, reducing the harm caused and enabling them to respond to global conflict issues compassionately and effectively. • To allow teachers to develop pupils’ communication and life skills through challenging conversations, restorative questions, open-minded enquiry and reflection on global issues.
Teachers will: • Understand the core elements of the Young Peacemakers Project (YPP) • Assess how conflict within school is part of a global picture and explore alternative conflict resolution methods • Gain knowledge and hands-on practice for starting and supporting a peer mediation scheme reinforced by whole year group lessons • Know a range of group activities for building cooperation and communication skills • Identify their school’s needs and create a plan for implementing relevant elements of the whole school approach to conflict resolution • Feel confident in using and teaching critical thinking skills to resolve conflict, and in promoting values like empathy, fairness and active participation..
What will this course enable teachers to do better with respect to embedding global learning in their teaching? * Teachers will: • Be able to present a toolkit of problem-solving approaches, empowering pupils to decide on the best responses to real-life difficulties • Be equipped to support voluntary pupil-led activities pertaining to conflict resolution such as a peer mediation scheme • Know how to embed conflict resolution in a whole school approach that expresses their school’s core values • Nurture pupils’ sense of human interdependence • Be able to deliver stronger social, moral, and cultural aspects of learning by exploring conflicts, asking students to evaluate moral choices, and providing opportunities to learn and practice skills for creating greater sensitivity to different perspectives.

Jenny Owen is Assistant Programme Manager and trainer for CRESST, and an accredited mediator and qualified secondary teacher. She facilitates whole class sessions for YPP primary school pupils and co-leads peer mediation training in primary schools, as well as overseeing the planning and delivery of staff training programmes. She has 6 years experience of teaching RE, PSHE and Philosophy in Sheffield and Rotherham schools and colleges. Jenny also has 8 years of experience in Non-Violent Communication (NVC); 3 months teaching experience in Kathmandu, Nepal.
