Aims of the course:

to explore the potential of picture books and global fiction for introducing learners to the world and global issues; to enable teachers to support learners to engage with a range of global perspectives through story; to equip teachers with new teaching activities and techniques around global picture books and fiction; to enable teachers to think critically about how and what they teach, and the implications of this for global learning; to support teachers to respond to big issues in creative and critical ways; to reinvigorate and enthuse teachers to engage with global learning, values and Bigger Than Self issues.

Expected outcomes of the course:

Teachers will feel confident to use a range of global picture books and fiction to help learners better understand their connections to others and the wider world; Teachers will be introduced to a range of dialogic approaches that help to develop critical thinking; Teachers will have thought deeply about global issues and how these relate to their own values and teaching.

Embedding global learning in your teaching:

Teachers will be enabled to engage in a range of core knowledge areas through being introduced to books that deal with global issues. The tools and techniques used in the course will model dialogic, participatory and critical thinking skills essential for global learning and offer support for taking these back into their own setting. Reflective approaches using picture books and fiction as a stimulus will help teachers to engage with the values underpinning global learning. The course will give teachers greater confidence to integrate global learning into core literacy areas of reading, writing and communication (speaking and listening)

Minimum number of 10 participants. This course is designed for in school delivery as an inset or for a cluster. The price of £50 per person is based on this.
