Aims of the course:

Based on the work of DECSY’s ‘Gender Respect’ project with primary and secondary schools in South Yorkshire, this workshop will support schools in developing and implementing their duty in relation to gender, under the Equality Act 2010 • To eliminate discrimination • Advance equality of opportunity • To foster good relations The exact nature of the course will be determined through prior discussions with DECSY and will be tailored to the needs and priorities of the school.

Expected outcomes of the course:

Depending on the agreed training needs, learning outcomes of this course could include the following for course participants: • To understand recent theory on how children learn gender identity • To have considered the research evidence for the impact that gender stereotyping has on children and young people in relation to their learning, relationships with others and their aspirations • To have considered relationships and procedures in their school and how these promote gender equality • To have considered ways of developing pupils’ critical awareness of gender equality in an historical and geographical context • To know how to carry out an audit of materials and curriculum in relation to gender equality • To know how the taught curriculum can be enhanced to include gender equality in a global context

Embedding global learning in your teaching:

Depending on the agreed training needs, this course will enable teachers to embed gender equality in a global context through the curriculum.

Other information:

This is whole school training tailored to the particular needs of the school. Twilight sessions or half day sessions can also be arranged and larger numbers can be catered for. Training can also take place at DECSY with access to an extensive resource centre curriculum materials.
